Acorn Solutions' GPS Wedge

The GPS Wedge is a tool for creating Location-Based Services using a mobile (laptop) computer and a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver   The GPS Wedge is an  ActiveX control that monitors a GPS attached to the serial port of your computer and allows easy programmatic access to the GPS readings.   These readings include time and position, speed and direction, all of which can be accessed by your software using the GPS Wedge software.

Your application can a traditional  Windows-based program or a web browser interface.  We have created a simple GPS Wedge Demo Page that allows you to see the GPS Wedge in action using your web browser.

Click here to view the GPS Wedge Demo Page.

It's a simple HTML form "post-and-echo" application, but it shows how easy it is to use the GPS Wedge. The demo versions of the software will download and install automatically when you load the page (If you have ActiveX downloading and execution  enabled in your browser).  If you would like to download the .CAB file directly, it can be found here.  Please contact us if you are interested in the commercial version of this software.

With the GPS Wedge,  your server-side applications never need to know how the client has determined its position.  It just receives Latitude, Longitude, GMT, Speed, etc. from the browser as if they were entered by hand (except you don't have to enter them! ).

Note:  We have currently only tested the GPS Wedge Demo with Internet Explorer 6, although it should work with IE 4 or later.  Most GPS will work if they fully support the NMEA 0183 standard, but we generally use Garmin products in our solutions.
