As a logical extension of the monitoring capabilities created in our
IMASproject, the Unified
Systems Manager provided further access to system administration data and administrative functions over the
web. Our customer's goal was to be able to administer UNIX & NT systems through a common,
web-based user interface. Our strategy is to first create infrastructure for the
various monitoring and administrative functions and then create a web interface
for each of these systems that abstracts the operating system details away from
the administrative interface. In final phases of the project, these individual web-based
interfaces will be woven together within a single administrative site. This process
is shown in the following diagram:
The Web interfaces are completed to the SNMP event logs, Microsoft
SMS server data, and a custom performance-monitoring database (on SQL server).
Future work will continue to integrate user and configuration management features.
As Web-based Enterpise Mangement (WBEM) becomes more widely available,
solutions like this one will become significantly easier to
create, since the work of creating the web interfaces to administrative tools will be done by the vendors.
