About the KPNC Intranet Project | ||||||||
In the KPNC project, we created the infrastructure and
much of the initial Intranet content for the North
Carolina Region of Kaiser-Permanente. This site
included many database applications, a library of
patient handout documents, and a large number of
internal references, all with the goal of improving
patient care.
Almost all of the site was created and hosted with Microsoft technologies: Visual Studio, Frontpage and Office, Windows NT, IIS with ASP, SQL Server, etc. A fair amount of the content existed, but had to be retargeted for web delivery. This meant converting flat files to databases, reengineering some work processes to include the web, and educating Kaiser's employees about the resources available on the site. While we were creating the site, we were also mentoring Kaiser-Permanente's developers in the same methods and techniques we were using. By doing this, not only could they help us create the content, but they could continue to maintain and extend the the site after we had finished. As it turned out, one of the physicians favorite resources on the site was the Pharmacy Formulary, a database of all of the approved drugs, their available dosages, and other characteristics like cost or generic name.
